An Open Letter to the Men of America

Do you have what it takes to be a Mason and more particularly a Scottish Rite Mason? Scottish Rite Masons are proud because the founding values of this country—values that placed reason over ignorance, science over superstition, freedom over tyranny, and imagination over imitation-- were the founding values that liberated humankind and formed the experiment that is the United States of America. It was no accident that so many of our founders were Freemasons, for it was in the lodges of Freemasonry that men such as Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, John Paul Jones, Paul Revere, and George Washington honed the ideas that became America. Freemasonry and Scottish Rite Masonry was and is a school for these Enlightenment Values.

For the past few decades Freemasons kept to themselves focusing on philanthropy rather than philosophy. Masons believed that the values they helped put in place were secure. They thought America would always be America but they were wrong.

Freemasonry is a fraternity. We speak to men, not in opposition to women, but it is primarily men who commit crimes, abandon their families, fail to pursue education, lead the charge against reason, seek to impose the views of a few, and undermine the right of people to think freely and live authentically, and hence it is men who need the guidance of Freemasonry most of all.

Freemasonry is not a religion or a political party. Masonry does not proselytize. In fact it is against Masonic Code to ask or invite someone to be a member. That decision must be made on your own. What we can do and are doing is inviting you to learn more about this great fraternity. The values that founded our country in the past are the values that will save our nation in the future. Do you have what it takes?
